This city of Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh is home to the Taj Mahal, the single most famous landmark a visitor to India can see. Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century in memory of his beloved consort Mumtaj Mahal, this spectacular architectural marvel took some 20,000 laborers and 22 years to be built. Built by Akbar, it once served the capital of the Mughal Empire.
