Pondicherry also known as Puducherry in local vernacular is a Union Territory in India. Pondicherry was a stronghold of French colonialism in India and is often referred to as the French Riviera of the East. The Pondicherry city is still replete with the remnants of the French colonialists who strove to make their colony resemble their hometown. Pondicherry was designed after the French grid pattern and features neat sectors and perpendicular streets. The entire town is divided into 2 sections, the French Quarter known as Ville Blanche or 'White town' and the Indian quarter known as Ville Noire or 'Black Town'. Many of the streets in Pondicherry still retain their French names and French style villas are a common sight. In the French quarter, the buildings are built in typically colonial style with long compounds and Doric pillars and arches and porches. The Indian quarter consists of houses lined with verandas, and houses with large doors and grills. These distinctly different French and Indian style houses are identified in threir difference and are preserved from destruction by an organization named INTACH. If ever anyone wishes to demolish the existing house in the town area and rebuild, they need to take permission from this organization and the new structure they build must resemble the one they demolished. Pondicherry is famous also as the place where the sage and activist Sri Aurobindo achieved Moksha. The Aurobindo Ashram still draws a large number of devotees among which there are quite a few eminent people, who come here to serve the Ashram just in exchange of daily bread.
